Losing the Magic of Movie Theaters

Image
Losing the Magic of Movie Theaters      The best part of watching a movie is the experience of watching it with others. There is just something so magical and nostalgic about sitting in a theater surrounded by a bunch of people. The collective silence during a tense moment, the laughter after a funny joke, and the synchronized gasp during a jump scare create such a unique and joyful experience for everyone. The shared reactions and emotions amplify the moment and make the whole film much more enjoyable. The booming speakers, giant silver screen, and popcorn smell brings such a sense of nostalgia that helps people completely engross themselves in the film. When watching a movie in a theater, you become completely detached from reality, which is the best part of watching a film.      When the COVID-19 pandemic hit a few years ago, everyone was stuck in their houses and all movie theaters were closed. During this time, streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime were at t

Get Out Jordan Peele’s 2017 horror film titled, Get Out , follows the story of Chris Washington and his girlfriend Rose. When Rose invites Chris to visit her family house he is concerned about how her family will react to him being a black man. When they arrive at the house, Rose’s parents, Dean and Missy, become overly accommodating to Chris, which he believes to be because of his race. The strange behavior of the black servants and Rose’s parents' weird attitude towards Chris makes him suspect the family. After being hypnotized by Missy and attacked by a black man after flashing a camera at him, Chris started to believe that the family was hypnotizing black people for their own benefit. When Chris tries to leave the house, we find out that Rose was tricking him the whole time. The family ties him up in the basement and he is shown a video explaining that someone has bought his body and is going to put their brain inside of him through a brain transplant. The Armitage family has

Lois Weber's "Suspense"

Image
Suspense     Lois Weber’s 1913, drama/thriller film titled, Suspense, is about a wife who is put in a dangerous situation when a man breaks into her home while her husband is away. The husband and the police rush to her rescue after she locks her and her infant child in a bedroom. The police catch the intruder just in time and save the wife and baby.       This film is notable for its use of suspenseful camera angles and editing. In this film, Weber creates a gripping plot that creates tension and anticipation in the audience. Although this is a silent film, Weber is able to create a suspenseful and interesting storyline without the use of sound, which makes this film and Lois Weber as a director, even more noteworthy.      Weber's work is especially significant because of her work as a director in a business predominantly run by men. Lois Weber was a pioneer for women who wanted to be a part of the film making insustry and she paved the way for future female directors. She push

Marie Antoinette Critique

Image
Marie Antoinette      Sofia Coppola's 2006 drama/romance film, Marie Antoinette, follows the life of Marie Antoinette starting as an Austrian princess and then marrying into her title as queen of France. The film portrays her journey into adjusting to her new life in a new country and her struggle to fufill all of the duties that come with being the queen. The King’s unwillingness to consummate the marriage, and Marie’s unusual personality and beliefs puts her in an unstable and potentially dangerous position. As the film goes on, Marie Antoinette becomes more comfortable in France and gives into the luxurious and extravagant lifestyle of French aristocracy. She starts to spend large sums of money on unimportant and unnecessary things which leads the lower class people to revolt against the Kingdom, driving the King, Queen, and their children out of the castle.  After watching this film, it was obvious to me that Sofia Copolla is an auteur. This film had an overall

The main character, L.B Jeffries, is a professional photographer, who was recently injured in a racecar accident. As Jeff watches his neighbors, he becomes convinced that his neighbor, Lars Thorwald, has killed his wife. He observes him for days at a time, trying to come up with explanations for his unusual behavior. Throughout Mr. Jeffries’s investigation, Lisa, Mr. Jeffries’s perfect, beautiful, and rich girlfriend, is trying to get Jeffries to commit to her. However, Jeffries is convinced that Lisa cannot keep up with his dangerous and constantly “on the go” lifestyle. Throughout the film, Lisa starts to show a more adventurous and risky side of her, which draws Jeffries into her.
